John H. C. Baker's letters from California to his brother Daniel H. Baker, 1856-1862.

Seven autograph manuscript letters discussing the health problems which prevented him from working for months, and family and local news from Maine. He mentions being unsuccessful in the mines, and that he was glad that he didn't go to Fraser River during the gold rush there. He also gives a list of current prices of goods, and states his plans to move to Folsom to clerk in a store. The last letter is written from San Francisco where he had sought medical treatment for his rheumatism.
